Common Questions About the Working Holiday Visa

What counts as specified work for extensions?

Eligible paid work in approved industries/locations (e.g., regional agriculture or hospitality).

Specified work is paid work in approved industries and designated areas. Key points:
  • Typically 3 months for a second visa
  • Typically 6 months for a third visa
  • Evidence and correct location/industry are critical

Are there special rules for some nationalities?

Yes. UK passport holders (18-35) are exempt from specified work requirements and have extended age eligibility.

Eligibility varies by passport country. UK nationals have significant advantages:
  • Extended age eligibility up to 35 years old (most other countries limit to age 30)
  • No specified work requirement for second and third visas

Other countries may have different arrangements. Always check your specific country's requirements on the Department of Home Affairs website.

What's NOT included in the info pack?

This is a DIY kit, not a migration agent service.

The kit does NOT include:
  • Personalised migration advice
  • Lodgement of your visa application on your behalf
  • Communication with the Department of Home Affairs
  • Job placement or employer connections
  • Review of your individual documents

It provides step-by-step instructions, regional work evidence templates, and checklists so you can confidently prepare and lodge your own application.

How long can I stay on a Working Holiday Visa?

Up to 12 months per visa, with up to 3 years total if you meet specified work requirements.

Subclass 417/462 visas are generally granted for up to 12 months. Completing eligible "specified work" can open a pathway to a second and third visa:
  • First visa: up to 12 months
  • Second visa: up to 12 months (requires 3 months specified work)
  • Third visa: up to 12 months (requires 6 months specified work)

This allows a total stay of up to 3 years, subject to meeting all criteria.

What is the government visa fee?

AUD $840 (first visa) / AUD $1,000 (second/third visa). Additional STAC fee of AUD $700 may apply for certain onshore applications.

The base Visa Application Charge (VAC) for Working Holiday Visa is:
  • First visa: AUD $840
  • Second and third visa: AUD $1,000

If you are applying for a second or third Working Holiday visa while in Australia, you may also be required to pay a Subsequent Temporary Application Charge (STAC) of AUD $700.

Fees are set by the Department of Home Affairs and can change. Always check the official website before lodging your application.
