5 Regional Work Mistakes That Can Cost You Months

What counts as specified regional work - and what doesn't

Make Sure Your Work Actually Counts

It's worth checking the requirements before you start. Some people complete regional work only to find it didn't meet the rules for a 2nd or 3rd year visa - so a little planning up front can save a lot of time.

Mistake #1: Working in Non-Eligible Postcodes

Why it fails:

  • βœ— Assuming "regional" means anywhere outside cities
  • βœ— Not checking the official postcode list before starting work
  • βœ— Working in areas that look rural but don't count

What's in the pack:

βœ“ Regional work guide explaining eligible areas and postcodes
βœ“ Information on regional work requirements by state
βœ“ Tips on verifying eligible locations before you start

Mistake #2: Hospitality Work in Areas Where It Doesn't Count

Why it fails:

  • βœ— Hospitality work in states or areas where it's not eligible for specified work
  • βœ— Not understanding which visa subclass you hold (417 vs 462) and how it affects eligibility - for 462, mining does not count at all
  • βœ— Admin or office roles away from the farm or site - though some support roles within a specified industry in an eligible postcode may be accepted under current DHA flexibility

What's in the pack:

βœ“ Regional work guide with all eligible industries by visa subclass and location
βœ“ Complete postcode lists showing where hospitality counts
βœ“ State-by-state breakdown of hospitality eligibility for 417 and 462

Mistake #3: Insufficient or Missing Employment Evidence

Why it fails:

  • βœ— Payslips that don't show the employer's ABN or address
  • βœ— Cash-in-hand work with no documentation
  • βœ— Employment letters missing critical details (postcode, dates, duties, total days)

What's in the pack:

βœ“ Document checklist for regional work evidence
βœ“ Employment letter template showing all required information
βœ“ Tips on proper documentation and record keeping from day one

Mistake #4: Miscounting Your Days

Why it fails:

  • βœ— Only counting Monday–Friday work days - weekends count toward your 88 days while you are employed and being paid
  • βœ— Part-time workers assuming 88 calendar days is always enough - you need to work proportionally more calendar time to accumulate the equivalent of 88 full-time days
  • βœ— Not working the equivalent days of a full-time employee in your specific role and industry over the period (hours vary by industry - there is no single fixed weekly hour requirement)

What's in the pack:

βœ“ Regional work guide explaining the DHA day calculation rules with worked examples
βœ“ Regional Work Tracker to log your work periods and keep count as you go
βœ“ Tips on combining work from multiple employers

Mistake #5: Not Understanding 2nd vs 3rd Year Requirements

Why it fails:

  • βœ— Thinking 2nd year and 3rd year requirements are the same - they're not (88 days vs 179 days)
  • βœ— Not understanding that 3rd year work must have been done during your second visa, not your first
  • βœ— Not knowing the 1 July 2019 rule - all specified work for a third visa must have been carried out on or after that date, regardless of industry

What's in the pack:

βœ“ Extension requirements guide for 2nd and 3rd year visas
βœ“ Pathway planning information and full eligibility criteria
βœ“ Country requirements guide for Working Holiday visas
