Skills Assessment Overview

A skills assessment verifies that your qualifications and experience match the nominated occupation. Whether you need one depends on your visa type and occupation.

Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) - Core Skills Stream

⚠️ Required only for some occupations

A skills assessment is not needed for every Core Skills role. It is mandatory only where your occupation and your passport country fall within the Department's specified list (for example a range of trades, and the program or project administrator occupation). Most other Core Skills occupations do not need one.

You generally will not need a skills assessment if:

  • Your occupation is not on the Department's specified skills assessment list for your situation
  • You already hold a 457 or 482 visa and are working in Australia in the nominated occupation
  • You hold the relevant qualification gained in Australia (or another permitted country) for the occupation
  • Your occupation requires registration or a licence and you already hold it (for example AHPRA for health professionals)

Common Assessing Authorities by Occupation:

  • Trades: TRA (Trades Recognition Australia)
  • Engineers: Engineers Australia (EA)
  • IT Professionals: ACS (Australian Computer Society)
  • Accountants: CPA, CA ANZ, or IPA
  • Nurses: AHPRA registration
  • Teachers: AITSL assessment

ENS Visa (Subclass 186) - Employer Nomination Scheme

Temporary Residence Transition Stream

If you're transitioning from a SID visa (482) to permanent residency through ENS 186 TRT stream:

✓ Usually Exempt

If you've worked for your employer for at least 2 years in the last 3 years on a SID visa in the same occupation, you're generally exempt from skills assessment requirements under the TRT stream.

Direct Entry Stream

✗ Always Required

Skills assessment is MANDATORY for the Direct Entry stream. No exceptions unless you qualify for an exemption category.

Exemptions from Skills Assessment

You may be exempt from skills assessment if:

  • Annual earnings are above the relevant high income threshold (this figure is updated each year, so check the current amount)
  • Employed by a diplomatic or consular mission
  • Academic position at an Australian university
  • Certain religious workers
  • Executive or senior managers (with high salary evidence)

Skills Assessment Process

  1. Determine your assessing authority based on your occupation code (ANZSCO)
  2. Gather evidence: Qualifications, employment references, payslips, tax documents
  3. Submit application to the relevant assessing authority with fees
  4. Wait for assessment (processing times vary by authority)
  5. Receive outcome: Positive, negative, or requires additional information
  6. Use the assessment in your visa application

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Assuming You Don't Need One

Always check your specific occupation requirements. Requirements can change.

❌ Wrong Assessing Authority

Each occupation has a designated authority. Using the wrong one wastes time and money.

❌ Insufficient Evidence

Provide detailed employment references on company letterhead with job duties, hours, and dates.

❌ Not Allowing Enough Time

Skills assessments can take 3-6 months. Start early!
